Fay Victor Ensemble and Greene Avenue Music Release “Absinthe & Vermouth” November 5th

Thursday, August 22nd, 2013

Cover Art“The whole thing is as if Joni Mitchell wrote lyrics for a lost Betty Carter prog-rock album — and it totally works.”
-Patrick Jarenwattananon, 10 Greatest Moments from Jazz Recordings in 2009, NPR Jazz

Absinthe & Vermouth, is the third release of vocalist/composer Fay Victor’s flagship group the Fay Victor Ensemble will be released on November 5, 2013 on Greene Avenue Music. The new album reflects a change in instrumentation and an evolution of the compositions and presentation since 2009’s critically acclaimed The FreeSong Suite. While The FreeSong Suite went for blurred lines between the compositions,  Absinthe & Vermouth are whole pieces and song combinations where blurred lines are integral to the core of these new compositions.

We live in a wacky world where random things come and go, sometimes without rhyme or reason. We highly intelligent beings have worked hard for millennia to try and make sense of it all but still the essence of ‘it’ feels just beyond our grasp.  Absinthe & Vermouth relishes this situation as a breeding ground to observe the world as a topsy-turvy universe full of strange and beautiful stories. Pieces such as “Big Bag” reveals secrets held in plain sight, “Robot Clown” exposes the rigid smile of modern day life and “Crystal” glorifies that one moment so wonderful you never want to let it go.  Absinthe & Vermouth further highlights the sheer acumen and virtuosity of its members – vocalist Fay Victor, one of the most flexible vocalists in improvised music and jazz whose style has been described  as “artistically complete” (Ben Ratliff,  The New York Times), “…at the vanguard of jazz singers” (Robert Iannapollo, Signal to Noise), Victor’s “soulful, emotive delivery combines with avant-tinged invention, placing her alongside great vocal innovators like Betty Carter, Jeanne Lee, Sheila Jordan” (John Kelman, Allaboutjazz.com) and “one of the most extraordinary vocalists on the scene today” (Jerome Wilson, Cadence). Guitarist Anders Nilsson who “plucks spidery figures and dissonant clusters that loom like an overcast sky” (Time Out Chicago) and double bassist Ken Filiano, whom Cadence founder Robert Rusch says is “a master of technique [who] has unleashed an emotional depth in the last couple of years to make him one of creative improvising music’s most formidable bassists.”  This eight year old working unit operating with the most mundane of jazz instrumentations while turning the possibilities of that sound on its head through sonic and orchestral explorations, contrapuntal interplay, instrumental passages, wordful and wordless improvising and tight compositions all underpinning stories about the world from their unique perspective.

Screen Shot 2013-07-24 at 11.00.39 AMLed by Acclaimed Drummer-Composer John Hollenbeck,The Group Offers Brilliant New Pieces Written During & Inspired By The Month of September

Drummer-percussionist and three-time Grammy nominee John Hollenbeck, one of the most distinctive and respected composers in jazz and new music, has created an estimable body of work since the late ’90s with his Claudia Quintet. Hailed by Nate Chinen of the New York Timesfor their “clockwork intricacy and crisp premeditation … [striking an] accord between the factions of progressive jazz, classical Minimalism and low-glare experimental rock,” the Claudia Quintet tackles Hollenbeck’s highly demanding works with a wry improvising spirit and a backbone of surging, mesmerizing rhythm.

Following up earlier celebrated releases including What Is The Beautiful?,Royal Toast, FOR, Semi-Formal, and I, Claudia the Claudia Quintet returns with September. In the lineup are two newer players: accordionist Red Wierenga, like Hollenbeck an alum of the Eastman School of Music; and (on four tracks) bassist Chris Tordini, a frequent sub for Claudia’s original bassist Drew Gress. Hugely in-demand as a sideman and an inspired bandleader in his own right, Gress appears on six of the 10 tracks that make up September.

Pianist BRYN ROBERTS FABLES NY Release Gig September 14th at SubCulture

Friday, August 16th, 2013

Cover ArtPianist BRYN ROBERTS New York Release Gig At Sub Culture on September 14th For FABLES, On Nineteen-Eight Records September 17th, Featuring Seamus Blake, Orlando LeFleming, And Jonathan Blake
His First Record As a Leader Since 2004’s Ludlow on Fresh Sound New Talent

“As an improvising musician, playing and touring with musicians who aren’t at all involved with improvisation can be a challenge, but it’s something that’s taught me a lot,” says Bryn Roberts. “Sometimes a simple, beautifully constructed song performed really well is enough on it’s own that it doesn’t require much elaboration. It’s nice to have a musical skill set from years of playing jazz that lets me adapt to different situations, but after a while work solely as a sideman in a songwriter context starts to feel limiting. I wanted to have a vehicle more specifically for my own music and playing, and that’s what inspired me to record this new CD. I like to think that there is a melodic directness to my new compositions that reflects some of what I’ve picked up from working with more mainstream artists.”

Fables marks a welcome return to Roberts’ roots as a composer and improviser on the jazz scene after 5 years spent as a busy sideman in the more mainstream music world. He is an introspective, understated and lyrical pianist, and an inventive composer and arranger with a personal sound who has assembled a band of accomplished collaborators to bring this collection of new music to life:Seamus Blake on saxophones, Orlando LeFleming on bass and Johnathan Blake on drums. Roberts penned six new compositions for this latest effort, and the album is rounded out by his take on two standard songs from the American songbook.

Ropeadope Records Releases Fiddler-Composer Dana Lyn’s Aqualude, An Instrumental Story of the Sea on Oct. 15

Thursday, August 15th, 2013

Dana_Aqualude_cover_FINAL-e1376420680904“Lyn makes you feel as if you were sitting there in the room as she plays, the music flowing freely and effortlessly from one tune to the next.” — The Irish Edition

Brooklyn-based fiddler-composer Dana Lyn has collaborated with a dizzying variety of top artists – from actor-director Ethan Hawke and actor-writer Vincent D’Onofrio to Grammy Award-winning vocalists Loudon Wainwright III and Susan McKeown, from Irish-American supergroup Cherish the Ladies and edgy classical quartet Brooklyn Rider to indie-rockers the Walkmen and Florence & the Machine. In a leap forward as a composer and solo artist, Lyn will release her sophomore solo album, Aqualude, on Oct. 15, 2013, via Ropeadope RecordsAqualude is an instrumental story of the sea that’s as playfully evocative as it is tunefully irresistible. Parts of the album were recorded on the set of Clive, an Off-Broadway theater piece directed by Hawke that saw Lyn playing violin and specially created “musical doors” as part of the production; you can see her accompanying Hawke singing in character for this New York Times video.

Aqualude follows Lyn’s 2004 solo album of traditional and original Irish fiddle tunes,Looking for the Early Opener, and two collaborative releases: In Double, a beguiling set of folk-tinged rearrangements of music by J.S. Bach with guitarist Rob Moose as the duo Bach Reformed, from 2009; and The Hare Said a Prayer to the Rainbow and Followed the Fox Down the Hole, an album of traditional, original and improvised music by her duo with guitarist Kyle Sanna, from 2011. In the works for a 2014 release is Lyn’s artful collaboration with Vincent D’Onofrio, in which she sets his hugely entertaining spoken-word journal “oddities” to music.

Le Stagioni del Commissario Ricciardi
October 22nd on Tzadik Records

Featuring His Acoustic Trio with
Bassist Ken Filiano and
Percussionist Satoshi Takeishi

Guitarist and composer Marco Cappelli has a long history of working with literature. His first album with his Acoustic Trio, Les Nuages en France(Mode Records), was based on the work of French novelist Fred Vargas. On the trio’s 2011 European tour, their performance in Cappelli’s hometown of Naples was part of a literary series.

Author Maurizio De Giovanni was invited by the curator, and read texts while Cappelli, bassist Ken Filiano and percussionist Satoshi Takeishiimprovised. As a present to celebrate the success of the impromptu collaboration, de Giovanni gave Cappelli his four novels, Le stagioni del Commissario Riccardi (“The four seasons of Detective Ricciardi”). “I went deep into Maurizio’s stories,” Cappelli says, “and found them to be impressive, for his style as well as their setting in 1930s Naples. I decided that Detective Ricciardi would be my next inspiration for the Acoustic Trio.”
