JUANMA TRUJILLO

Endectomorph Music is thrilled to announce the forthcoming release of “Howl,” the sixth album as a leader from acclaimed guitarist and composer Juanma Trujillo on July 12th, 2024, “Howl” promises to be a groundbreaking addition to Trujillo’s illustrious discography, featuring six original compositions for jazz quartet.

For nearly a decade, Trujillo has been quietly but tirelessly carving his place within the jazz and improvised music scene. His tenure in New York City saw him as a dynamic presence across a diverse array of ensembles, including Francisco Mela’s MPT Trio, Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, and Mimi Jones’s Black Madonna. Additionally, he fostered ongoing collaborations with esteemed musicians such as Ras Moshé, Gerald Cleaver, William Parker, and Cooper-Moore, among others. Trujillo’s versatility and dedication to musical exploration have solidified his reputation as a sought-after artist within the vibrant landscape of contemporary jazz.

This latest album showcases the remarkable synergy of Trujillo’s quartet, comprising Kevin Sun on tenor saxophone, Andrew Schiller on bass, and Matt Honor on drums. These esteemed musicians, who have been Trujillo’s steadfast collaborators, bring an unparalleled depth and richness to the music, honed through years of performance and exploration together in New York City. “I remember the first time we played together and how much of an immediate character and mood the music had, over the years that quality has always been there with them, there’s always room to work on small details of the tunes here and there but I never have to worry that the music will feel safe or stale”, says the bandleader.

In the liner notes for the record, saxophonist and composer Ethan Helm reflects on the album’s thematic exploration of touch, stating, “it captures the “touch” of four friends and their musical and geographic closeness. But “touch” is also a musical-physical theme, because, for the first time, Trujillo has restricted himself to an acoustic guitar. While Trujillo’s electric vistas on previous records evoke psychedelic skies and gnarled desert, Howl is a study and expression of the quiet tactility of sound, where physical touch and sonic production are one.”
