ROXANA AMED

The mesmerizing Argentinean-American singer, composer, bandleader, producer, and educator Roxana Amed has paved a long road breaking through barriers and glass ceilings her entire life, especially since arriving in the U.S. in 2013.

Ontology, Amed’s 2021 stateside debut, twice nominated for a Latin Grammy, and winner of Argentina’s Premio Gardel – the first for a woman in any jazz category – introduced international audiences to her unique blend of ríoplatense-nuanced, post-bop jazz fusion. It was quickly followed by two more albums, in 2022, Unánime, which also snagged a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album as it embraced even more Pan-Latin idioms and featured iconic Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés, amongst other guest luminaries; and, in 2023, Los Trabajos y Las Noches, a collection of songs in collaboration with Finnish pianist and composer Frank Carlberg, that incorporates the poems of Argentinean poet Alejandra Pizarnik.

With Becoming Human, Amed’s new release, recorded in Miami in October 2023 and sponsored by a New Jazz Works grant from Chamber Music America, the multi-faceted musician closes out another cycle.

“I feel that I’ve had to make certain efforts in my life to find my place,” Amed recounts. “I’ve come full circle and that is the precise moment when you start looking back because you already know what lies ahead. So, I am standing in that moment, realizing that whatever comes is a blessing, a gift of life.”
