RUSS LOSSING

Alternate Side Parking Music, due out July 7, 2023 is Lossing’s sixth album on his own Aqua Piazza Records imprint and debuts Lossing’s new quartet King Vulture with Adam Kolker, Matt Pavolka and Dayeon Seok. The album finds the always dauntless composer devising new strategies to spark venturesome improvisations.

Pianist, composer and improviser Russ Lossing, based in New York City for over 35 years, is at the forefront of creative jazz. Lossing has 23 records as leader on European and American record labels including hatOLOGY, Ezz-Thetics, Sunnyside, Clean Feed and Fresh Sound labels. Lossing played with master drummer Paul Motian over a period of 12 years performing and recording including week-long stints at the Village Vanguard as a member of Motian’s Quintet. He has toured world-wide playing major jazz clubs and festivals both as leader and side-man.

Lossing composed the music for Alternate Side Parking Music sitting in his car while dealing with “alternate side parking” regulations in Manhattan and was partially inspired by the experience of having to sit in your car on the streets of New York City for hours every week: a constant cacophony of sights and sounds.

Lossing assembled the members of King Vulture to explore this new set of compositions: saxophonist and bass clarinetist Adam Kolker, with whom he’s been recording for over 20 years; bassist Matt Pavolka, also a longtime collaborator; and a new discovery, Korean-born drummer Dayeon Seok. The quartet spent four years investigating the material on bandstands in and around NYC before finally entering the studio to record Alternate Side Parking Music.
